First Day at the MTC

Before entering the MTC

Dear Family,

How is everything going since we saw each other on Wednesday? Things here at the MTC are good. they keep us pretty busy so we don't really have time to be homesick.

After I left I was taken by a Host Sister to my room to put my luggage there and then we went through the process of getting my name tag and finding my classroom and meeting my companion. My class has twelve missionaries-4 sister and 8 elders. They say that yesterdays influx of missionaries is the biggest they have had in a long time.

My companion is Sister Hogg (emphasis on the o). She is from Idaho and went to school at BYU-I before her mission, but I had never seen her before. She will be serving in the Marshal Islands. Most of the sisters are companions with someone who is going to the same area which makes us think that we are the only sisters going to our areas. Sister Hogg is very nice and we are only alike in that we are both kind of quiet.

There are four other sister in our room, Sister Thorne, Sister Maynard, Sister Park and Sister Cashmore. three of them are going to Independence, Missouri and one is going to Cleveland, Ohio. they are all great sister, a lot of fun and very giggly. Sister Cashmore I know from BYU-Idaho, we had some classes together. She was in the room when I came to put my luggage there and it was nice to see a familiar face.

Everyone here is very nice. Everywhere you walk someone says "hello" in the language that they will be speaking on the mission.

This morning we woke up at 6:15am to try and beat the 6:30am rush to the shower but there was still a line. I am glad I only have to deal with a community shower for 3 weeks.

My companion and I just got done with the immunizations and stuff to make sure we had all the correct ones. (I passed! and don't need to get any!) We are now waiting for our time to go to lunch.

After lunch we will have classroom instruction, zone teaching and then dinner at 4:40pm. They have dinner so early here! Last night I got hungry around 9:00 because of having an early dinner. But I will get used to it.

We will also meet with Branch President tonight. I have learned that my estimated departure date is December 5, but that could change.

Things are different being in the MTC than I had imagined, but everything is good. I am having fun getting lost with my companion and trying to learn everything that we are getting taught. They throw a lot of stuff at us that it is a little overwhelming to take in, but I am doing well

I saw Sister Megan Olpin last night. i had been trying o find her all day and she ended up finding me. We didn't have a lot of time to talk so I hope I get to see her again before she leaves for the field on Monday.

I hop that Evan has fun this weekend playing football. I hope they did well and won! You will have to write and tell me all about it. I hope that everything is well with everyone at home. I miss you, but I am glad to be here at the MTC.

Called To Serve

On Wednesday, August 17, 2011 I received my mission call. I had to wait until after work and after the family all got home to open my call. Sitting around the dinner table my family made guesses on where I would go and then I opened my call. Krista was the closest in saying that I would go to Antarctica.

I have been called to serve in the New Zealand Wellington Mission. English speaking. I report to the Provo MTC on November 16th.

A decision that will change my life...

And no, I am not getting married.

So off and on over the past year my mind has wondered over the idea of serving a mission. Well, that is no longer just an idea... It became a fact just after this last April General Conference. Some of the talks really influenced my decision;

Elder Johnson, in the Sunday Morning session, said, "Growth cannot come by taking the easy way."

Elder Chirstofferson, in the Sunday Afternoon session, said that we need to willingly accept and receive direction/correction from the Lord.

And Elder Uchtdorf in the Sunday Morning session said, "God hears and answers the prayers of His children"

Through these talks the idea of going on a mission solidified. And then the Tuesday after General Conference I was on Temple Square, after having done baptisms for the dead. There were several sister missionaries walking around and I stopped a companionship to ask them what made them decide to serve a mission. I can't exactly remember what they said, but I do know that what they said helped me to fully decide to go on a mission.

Just this last week I started filling out my mission papers. I am so excited to be able to go out and preach the Gospel to the world. I am taking a mission prep class this semester and it is by far my favorite class that I am taking. I can submit my papers in the end of June and should, hopefully, be getting my call in the beginning of August!
